Sextortion of women seems to be on the rise recently. According to Gujarat Police officers, cybercrime police stations have received eight sextortion complaints from women from Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar over the past ten days.
In the previous years, such cases were rare. For example, only two to three sextortion calls of this nature were reported to police in 2020 and 2021.
Police said that since Russian hackers have been busy hitting Ukrainian websites over the past two months, the fraudsters have started a new trick for extorting money.
They now make a video call to a woman, and once she receives the call, the man who initiated the call starts making sexual gestures. After which, even if the woman disconnects the call immediately, the fraudster has enough video footage to blackmail her.
The police also said that the fraudsters then send a recording to the woman and demand five lakhs. The officers said many women targeted by extortionists do not file police complaints because of the fear of being publicly shamed.
The fraudsters use the dark web and the numbers of countries such as the US and Canada, as most of these women have relatives living there. Hence they pick up the call.
In some cases, the sextortiohists play porn clips during the call or use technology to simulate the act of a man disrobing. The police said the hunt is on for the fraudsters. Efforts are also underway to persuade women to file formal complaints.
