The city of Ahmedabad has brought back the double-decker bus service after a gap of more than 30 years. The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has introduced seven new electric AC double-decker buses on an experimental basis. The buses are run by the Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service (AMTS) and cost Rs. 6 crore in the first phase.
The double-decker buses have a seating capacity of 65 passengers, with 29 seats on the lower deck and 36 on the upper deck. The buses are manufactured by Switch company, which also operates similar buses in GIFT City in Gandhinagar and Mumbai. The buses are equipped with fire extinguishers, CCTV cameras, ‘stop’ buttons, walkie-talkie sets, USB ports, and digital route boards.
The buses will ply on the routes that are free of height restrictions, such as underpasses, under bridges, or over bridges. The AMTS has chosen the Vasna – Ashram road route as the first one to launch the double-decker bus service. The service was inaugurated by the city Mayor at the Jamalpur headquarters of AMTS today.
