As temperatures soar above 40°C, the Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has taken an innovative step to provide respite to commuters from the blistering summer heat. The civic body has installed mist generators at various traffic junctions across the city.
The pilot project involves the installation of a high-pressure sprinkler system at a crossroads near Kankaria Lakefront, among other locations. This system transforms water from its sprinklers into a fine mist, providing much-needed relief to commuters, particularly those on two-wheelers, from the relentless heat.
However, as with any pilot project, the mist system is not without its initial hiccups. One such issue is the mist being sprayed after vehicles have passed the traffic signal. While the public appreciates the cooling effect of the mist system, there are concerns that unsynchronized spraying could lead to unnecessary water and financial wastage.
In addition to the mist generators, the AMC has announced extended hours for public spaces to provide residents with more opportunities to escape the heat. Until July 15, Atal Bridge, the lower promenade of the Sabarmati Riverfront, and public parks will remain open until 11 p.m.
