AMC Spends Crores Only To Be Struck Off From The FIFA Event Hosting City List

The city was Ahmedabad was in the list of fie shortlisted cities to host the matches of prestigious FIFA under 17 women’s football games along with Bhubaneshwar, Navi Mumbai, Kolkata and Guwahati. However, the list has been reduced to three cities now, leaving Ahmedabad, Kolkata and Guwahati and adding Margao.

However, in the run up for the preparation, since almost two years, the Ahmedbad Municiapal Corporation has incurred the expesnses upto almost Rs. 7 crores. AMC has spent Rs. 6.92 crores in improvng the facilities at Veer Savarkar Sports Facility at Memco.

AMC awarded the work contract worth Rs. 5.56 crores to Sport Turf and Golf Enterprise on 12 March 2020. However, due to Covid striking soon after, the work was delayed twice. The matches were to be played in April 2021. However, the tournament got further delayed due to second wave of Covid. Significntly, the work at the sports complex was completed in June 2021.

The contractor was fined Rs.7.65 lacs for the delay in project. At the same time, Rs. 1 crore extra were paid for ground maintenance.

The Rs. 5.56 crores work contract included construction of sub-soil drainage system, fully automated pop-up irrigation system, electric work, installation of a high mast pole, changing room and toilet blocks for Rs, 4.47 crores. The work was to be done as per international FIFA standard football practice ground specifications. The work was completed in June 2021 for a cost of Rs.6.92 crores.
