Amdavad Cops Identify 70 Crime Hotspots For Strict Vigilance

| Updated: February 16, 2023 13:25

Even as Ahmedabad continues being labelled a “safe city,” the city police have identified at least 70 hotspots where criminal activity is said to be higher than average.

Briefing on the undesirable trait, joint commissioner Ajay Chaudhary listed the culprits encountered could range from thugs, thieves, pickpockets to even gangsters. “The most notorious areas include Khani Pini Bazaar at Manek Chowk, the area near Vidyanagar School in Usmanpura, the vicinity of Azad Society, the area around St Xavier’s College, Shastrinagar crossroads and Mahalaxmi,” he added.

Apart from the major spots, there are at least 20 other areas which the cops have branded “vulnerable.” Plans are afoot to set up mobile watchtowers, review the area twice a week and deploy smart mobile poles with cameras to continuously monitor these spots, especially during events and functions.

Adding further, the senior cop briefed that apart from these areas, shopping malls, market places and lonely dark spots of the city are already on the priority list. “Under the Nirbhaya Fund initiative, we will proactively monitor critical locations prone to crime against children and women in a bid to reduce the response time to attend to unwanted incidents. Through live monitoring, we will conduct behaviour analysis. The deployment of face recognition cameras will enable us to identify and apprehend criminals on the run, habitual offenders, and those out on bail to ensure necessary action,” he said.

Surveillance Poles will be set up in sensitive spots and will be connected with optical fibre for MPLS, an ECB switch, a PTZ (Pan Tilt Zoom) camera, a fixed box camera, as well as a junction box with a public address system just in case there is an incident and the public need to be addressed on how to cope with the situation.
