From Sydney To Amreli: How Gujarat Police Helped An NRI Recover ₹11 Lakh

A Sydney-based Indian has successfully recovered ₹11 lakh after the Amreli Cyber Crime Police in Gujarat acted quickly on his complaint and traced the money within weeks. The case has been widely appreciated as an example of how timely police action and proper coordination can help victims of cyber-enabled financial fraud, even when they are living abroad.

The victim, Saurabh Jolly, originally from New Delhi and now residing in Sydney, praised the Amreli police for their professionalism, transparency and constant communication throughout the investigation.

Money Sent for Gold Purchase, But Delivery Never Happened

According to the police, the incident began in April, when Jolly transferred ₹11 lakh to a person based in Amreli to purchase gold.

However, after receiving the payment, the seller allegedly failed to deliver the gold. As time passed without any response, Jolly realised he may have been cheated.

Living thousands of kilometres away in Australia, he was unsure whether his complaint would receive prompt attention. Despite this uncertainty, he decided to approach the Amreli Cyber Crime Police by sending an email complaint in June.

Cyber Crime Team Launched Immediate Investigation

After receiving the complaint, the Amreli Cyber Crime Police quickly began investigating the matter.

Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kharat said the cybercrime team coordinated closely with the concerned bank and remained in regular contact with the complainant throughout the investigation. Despite the geographical distance, the police ensured that Jolly was kept informed about every important development in the case.

The investigation focused on tracing the person who had received the money and finding a way to recover the amount.

Recipient Traced, Entire Amount Returned

Police Inspector Kamlesh Khatana said the cybercrime team successfully traced the recipient of the funds.

The individual was asked to return the money, following which the entire ₹11 lakh was refunded to Jolly in July.

The successful recovery was completed within a few weeks of the complaint being filed, bringing relief to the victim and demonstrating the effectiveness of coordinated cybercrime investigations.

Victim Appreciates Police Efforts

Following the recovery of his money, Jolly wrote a letter to the Amreli Superintendent of Police expressing his gratitude to the officers involved in the case.

He praised the team for their professionalism, patience and transparent communication throughout the investigation. Jolly said that despite living overseas, he never felt disconnected from the process because the officers regularly updated him and responded to his queries.

He also appreciated the team’s persistence in pursuing the matter until the money was fully recovered.

A Positive Example in the Fight Against Cyber Fraud

Jolly said the prompt handling of his complaint strengthened his confidence in the Gujarat Police and showed how dedicated policing can restore public trust in cybercrime investigations.

The case also serves as a reminder that victims of online financial fraud should report incidents without delay, regardless of where they are located. With timely reporting, proper documentation and coordinated efforts between police and financial institutions, fraudulent transactions can sometimes be traced and recovered before it is too late.

The successful recovery of ₹11 lakh highlights the growing role of cybercrime units in protecting citizens from financial fraud and ensuring that justice reaches victims, even across international borders.
