AR Rahman Defends Using AI To Revive Voices Of Late Singers For Lal Salaam Song

| Updated: January 30, 2024 19:21

AR Rahman, the renowned music composer, has faced mixed reactions from fans and critics for using AI (Artificial Intelligence) to bring back the voices of two deceased singers, Bamba Bakya and Shahul Hameed, for a song in Rajinikanth’s upcoming film Lal Salaam. The song, titled Thimiri Yezhuda, features the voice models of the late singers, who had worked with Rahman on many hit songs in the past. Bamba Bakya died of a cardiac arrest in 2022, while Shahul Hameed died in a car accident in 1997.

Rahman, who is known for his innovative and experimental approach to music, clarified that he had obtained permission from the families of the singers and paid them accordingly for using their voice algorithms. He also said that technology is not a threat or a nuisance if used correctly, and expressed his respect and nostalgia for the singers. He shared his clarification on his X account, along with a post from Sony Music South that explained how the AI tool was used to recreate the voices.

However, not everyone was impressed by Rahman’s use of AI in music composition. Some fans praised him for his tribute to the singers and his use of technology to preserve their voices. They also expressed their wish to hear the voices of other legendary singers like Swarnalatha and SPB in the future. Others, however, criticized him for violating the rights and consent of the singers, and for reducing the opportunities for new singers in the industry. They also questioned the need for using AI to create nostalgia, when the original songs of the singers are still available.

Lal Salaam is a sports action drama directed by Aishwarya Rajinikanth, starring Vikranth and Vishnu Vishal in the lead roles. Rajinikanth will make a cameo appearance in the film, which is expected to release on February 9. The film is said to promote religious harmony and social justice.
