After many marriages were either cancelled or put on hold due to Covid, in 2022 Ahmedabad saw 39,989 marriages recorded with the district registrar, the highest number of weddings solemnised and formally registered in the past five years.
In Covid years of 2020 and 2021, 27,159 and 33,436 marriages were registered respectively with the district registrar office. Before that, 33,946 marriages were registered in 2019 while 33,796 marriages were registered in 2018.
Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) officials said that conventionally an average 33,000 marriages are registered in Ahmedabad city each year. Pandemic years saw a dip due to curbs.
Marriage registration data shared by AMC suggests that soon after the first Covid case was detected on March 20, 2020, followed by the lockdown on March 25, a number of marriage plans were postponed. This is clearly reflected in the 2020 marriage registration numbers which saw some 8,000 marriages only registered in two months of January and February while only 19,000-odd marriages were recorded between March and December that year.
