At Least Seven Labourers Killed, Two Critically Injured After Elevator Collapsed Near Gujarat University Campus

At least 7 labourers were killed and two critically injured on Wednesday after the elevator of an under-construction building collapsed near Gujarat University campus in Ahmedabad district of Gujarat.

The under-construction high-rise Aspire-2 is located near the campus of Gujarat University.

According to the preliminary reports, a make-shift lift carrying 8 manual workers stopped working and broke at the seventh floor around 10.00 am in the morning. Out of eight, two workers jumped from the broken lift and the rest fell into the basement.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone 1, Lavina Sinha said, “Preliminary investigation has revealed the elevator carrying the workers crashed to the ground from the seventh floor, killing at least 7 workers (though 8 being claimed).”

Authorities of the AMC’s Fire and Emergency Services Department claimed to have received no communication regarding the accident. Though the firemen and a team of police reached the spot after the news broke on television.

The Chief Fire Officer Jayesh Khadia, speaking to media, said, “We learnt from media reports and phone calls received from media that such an incident has occurred. We then reached the spot to check the whereabouts of the accident. There has been no official communication or information shared by the developers or any other agency.”

However, Hitesh Barot, the chairman of AMC’s Standing Committee said that an inspection team has been launched to investigate the matter.

The injured labourers have been taken to a local hospital for their primary treatment, whereas the bodies have been shifted to Civil Hospital Sola. All the labourers- Sanjaybhai Babubhai Nayak; Jagdishbhai Rameshbhai Nayak; Ashwinbhai Somabhai Nayak; Mukesh Bharatbhai Nayak; Mukeshbhai Bharatbhai Nayak; Rajmal Sureshbhai Kharadi; Pankajbhai Shankarbhai Kharadi hailed from Ghoghamba area, a taluka in Panch Mahals district of Gujarat.
