| Updated: December 24, 2022 10:00

In a clear case of extortion and harassment, the Vastrapur Police (Crime Branch) arrested two for claiming ransom from a local businessman. According to reports, the complainant approached the police on Wednesday night after a call threatening him to pay up Rs 1.3 crore ransom or be faced with his son’s killing. His son is currently pursuing higher education in London.

“The caller knew that the boy was studying in the UK and demanded money saying that he was hired for the job. In short, he was seeking the amount to let go of the entirely made-up contract,” briefed police insiders.

The businessman’s call records revealed that the threats were made via e-mail and an app. The trail shortly led the police to Mohanraj Jayaballam Sengundar and Mohan Gavander. Headed by officer Suthar, the team managed to crack the case within 24 hours.

Mohanraj works in a private bank and was aware of the complainant’s bank account numbers, the family’s mobile number and the family’s assets. “The duo weas taking a chance at making fast bucks at the cost of the family,” added the investigating officer.
