A shocking murder case with links to Gujarat has stunned Uttar Pradesh after police arrested a Bhavnagar man for murdering his girlfriend, dismembering her body, and dumping the remains at different locations in Jaunpur district.
The accused, Hemal Khakharia (42), was arrested after a police encounter in the early hours of Monday. During the operation, police recovered the victim’s severed legs from his possession.
The woman, whose body was found in several black plastic bags on Sunday, was allegedly murdered and dismembered by Khakharia. According to police, the motive behind the crime became clear only after the accused was arrested.
Body Parts Found in Plastic Bags
Jaunpur Circle Officer (Madiyahu) Vijay Chaudhary said local residents out for a morning walk discovered foul-smelling black plastic bags lying beside a roadside in the Madiyahu area on Sunday. They immediately alerted the police.
When officers opened the bags, they found the severed head and torso of a woman. A search of the surrounding area later led to the recovery of the victim’s hands about one kilometre away.
Police then formed three investigation teams to identify the victim, locate the remaining body parts, and trace the accused.
Arrest After Police Encounter
Later on Sunday night, police received intelligence that a man riding a motorcycle was moving through the area carrying plastic bags similar to those used to dispose of the victim’s body. Around 12:30 am on Monday, police intercepted him near Ramnagar block gate.
According to police, the suspect opened fire after being surrounded. During the exchange of fire, he was shot in the leg and arrested. Police said they recovered:
The victim’s severed legs
The alleged murder weapons
The victim’s mobile phone
A pistol
Cartridges
A motorcycle
The accused was later admitted to hospital for treatment.
Relationship Began in Gujarat
Investigators said Hemal Khakharia had been living in a rented house in Teachers’ Colony in the Madiyahu area for work. About two months ago, he met the 38-year-old victim, a resident of Varanasi, through social media.
Police said the woman was married and had three children. She later obtained a job at a private company on Khakharia’s recommendation.
According to investigators, the woman frequently visited Khakharia’s rented accommodation on Saturdays. Their relationship became close, and she spent much of her time with him while occasionally visiting her family.
Dispute Over Mobile Phone
Police believe the murder followed an argument over the woman’s mobile phone. Investigators said she demanded access to Khakharia’s WhatsApp chats after suspecting that he was communicating with another woman. The argument escalated, and according to police, Khakharia slit her throat, killing her.
Body Dismembered and Dumped
Police alleged that after the murder, Khakharia dismembered the body, purchased black plastic bags, packed the body parts separately, and disposed of them at different locations. After police informed the victim’s family, her husband travelled to Madiyahu and identified the body.
Following a post-mortem examination, the body was handed over to the family. Police are also questioning the victim’s relatives as part of the investigation.
