Botad Hooch Tragedy: Rai takes Statements and Confessions Before Court

| Updated: August 1, 2022 21:25

In the aftermath of 50 lives tragically lost in the ‘Lattha’ incident in the Ahmedabad and Botad districts of the state, several arrests have been made. Confessions were also extracted from the prime accused. The victims, all men, belong to Ahmedabad, Botad, and Surendranagar. While many are still undergoing treatment, some lost their eyes and are also facing medical issues related to the liver.

Spurious liquor is known as ‘Lattha’ in local parlance in Botad.

Earlier, the government had transferred two districts SPs and suspended some officials as well as the DSP. The home department of the government then assigned the investigation to SP Nirlipt Rai. The IPS officer has already taken some statements on the matter. He has also called for three officials from the Amreli district to help with the case.

The ACP who was earlier conducting the investigation, including some police officials who are under a cloud of suspicion themselves, have been left out in the cold.

The investigating team headed by Rai took statements of 17 people before a judge. The team also extracted the confession from the main accused Jayesh alias Raju before the judge. Police sources said preparations were on to make a list of suspicious officials who were allegedly involved in the case. The full list, including the names of any other officials who were remotely involved in the incident, will be handed over to the government.
