Box-office Collection Day 1: Pushpa 2 Overtakes RRR, Jawan; Earns Over Rs 282 Cr

| Updated: December 6, 2024 15:44

The highly anticipated sequel Pushpa 2: The Rule, starring Allu Arjun, has taken the box office by storm, emerging as the biggest opener in Indian cinema history. Released in cinemas on Thursday, the film amassed a staggering Rs 165 crore nett on its first day. Including Rs 10.1 crore from Telugu previews on Wednesday, the total opening tally reached Rs 175.1 crore.

The film has set new benchmarks across languages, earning Rs 95.1 crore in Telugu, Rs 67 crore in Hindi, Rs 7 crore in Tamil, Rs 5 crore in Malayalam

and Rs 1 crore in Kannada. In Hindi, Pushpa 2 has become the highest opener ever, surpassing the previous record of Rs 65.5 crore set by Jawan. According to trade analyst Manobala Vijayabalan, the film has already earned approximately Rs 282.91 crore worldwide on its opening day.

Occupancy rates were equally impressive, with the Telugu version seeing 82.66% overall occupancy. In Hyderabad, the film recorded over 1500 shows with 94% occupancy, while Bengaluru hosted over 1000 screenings with 70% occupancy. In the Hindi-speaking regions, occupancy reached 59% on the opening day, with Delhi-NCR hosting over 1700 screenings at 61% occupancy and Mumbai offering more than 1500 shows with a 57% occupancy rate.

Pushpa 2 has dethroned some of the biggest Indian blockbusters to claim the top spot for all-time biggest openers. It surpassed RRR (Rs 133 crore nett), Baahubali 2 (Rs 121 crore nett), KGF 2 (Rs 116 crore nett) and Kalki 2898 AD (Rs 114 crore nett) to set a new record.

With a four-day opening weekend ahead, the film is projected to cross Rs 300 crore worldwide by the end of its first day. If the current momentum holds, Pushpa 2 could potentially earn Rs 1000 crore globally during its opening weekend—an achievement never before seen in Indian cinema.

The highest-grossing Indian film of all time remains Dangal, which earned over Rs 2500 crore following its release in China, followed by Baahubali 2, which collected Rs 1788 crore during its run. However, Pushpa 2 appears poised to challenge these records, with its extraordinary start setting it apart as a cultural and commercial juggernaut.

Directed by Sukumar and featuring Allu Arjun in a powerful role, Pushpa 2: The Rule is already being hailed as a cinematic phenomenon, redefining success in Indian cinema.
