Can AI Help Ease Out Burden Of Pending Cases? Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court Thinks Aloud

| Updated: July 21, 2022 8:45 am

Gujarat High Court Chief Justice Aravind Kumar, while speaking at the 13th Asian Criminology Conference, at the GNLU campus in Gandhinagar said “Information and communication have changed the world and turned it into a global village” and went on to suggest that the use of AI algorithms to dispose of pending cases, a nagging problem the judiciary is facing and receiving flak for.

Chief Justice Aravind Kumar spoke on the topic of “Emerging Trends in Technology and its Impact on Law, Criminal Justice, and Public Policy” in the inaugural session. He implored the GNLU students to think over crime-related questions enabled by newer technologies.

He informed that the Supreme Court has constituted AI committee which with the assistance of the National Informatics Centre (NIC) has arranged for the translation of nine Indian languages into English. A document page is translated in less than 30 seconds with 100 per cent accuracy, he said while emphasizing the inroads that artificial intelligence has made today in Supreme Court.

Baring this thought process and giving a possible outline of how AI can help, he took the example of Motor Vehicle cases which are highest in any court. The MV cases can be broadly classified into death cases, grievous injuries cases, simple injuries, and insurance claims, he said.

He further dissected the categories by taking the simple injuries where the medical expenditure and compensation sought for disability and loss of livelihood is around Rs 1 lakh and asked if, with the help of AI, 20,000 MV cases can be disposed of in one year which normally takes 2-3 years on an average?
