The former Punjab chief minister, Captain Amarinder Singh, is likely to be appointed as the new governor of Maharashtra after incumbent governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari, a former MLA, tendered his resignation.
Captain Amarinder Singh joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on September 19, 2022, and also merged his party, the Punjab Lok Congress (PLC), with the BJP.
He was also an elected member of the Legislative Assembly from Patiala and president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. He had earlier served as the Chief Minister of Punjab from 2002 to 2007. His father was the last Maharaja of Patiala State. He has also served in the Indian Army from 1963 to 1966.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, he won the Amritsar seat. Captain Singh resigned as the Chief Minister of Punjab on September 18, 2021.
