| Updated: January 18, 2025 18:38

CEPT University held its 19th Annual Convocation on campus on Saturday, with 644 students receiving their degrees. The graduating cohort included 398 postgraduates, 244 undergraduates, and two recipients of Doctor of Philosophy degrees.

The convocation commenced with a vibrant procession led by Sanjay Lalbhai, Chairman of CEPT University; Prof Barjor Mehta, President; and Dr Ajay Shah.

The event was graced by Chief Guest Dr Ajay Shah, Professor at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP), Senior Research Fellow, and Co-founder of the XKDR Forum.

The graduates were drawn from various faculties, including 205 from the Faculty of Architecture, 105 from the Faculty of Design, 11 from the Faculty of Management, 168 from the Faculty of Planning, and 155 from the Faculty of Technology. A total of 45 students were honoured with University Awards of Proficiency for their exceptional academic achievements.

The students, clad in traditional off-white and beige attire with colourful stoles, were welcomed with cheers from family members and guests as they made their way to the Shrenikbhai Plaza, the venue for the ceremony. The stage proceedings featured Prof Mehta, Lalbhai, Dr Shah, along with Prof Tridip Suhrud, Provost; Anita Hiranandani, Registrar; and the Deans of various faculties.

In his address, Prof Barjor Mehta warmly congratulated the graduating students and highlighted the significance of this convocation. He expressed pride in the inaugural graduating batches of two new Master’s programmes: Housing Design and Architectural Tectonics.

These programmes, he noted, are designed to meet industry demands, focusing on innovative housing solutions and the integration of technical construction systems with creative design.

Prof Mehta encouraged the graduates to remain connected with the University and assured them of its ongoing support.

Sanjay Lalbhai spoke about Ahmedabad’s potential as a global hub for interdisciplinary education and research, citing its dense concentration of premier institutions within a 9-square-kilometre radius.

He underscored the importance of breaking down disciplinary barriers and fostering collaboration to tackle complex global challenges.

Dr Ajay Shah, in his convocation address, drew inspiration from Greek philosophy and urged students to explore the deeper meaning of their lives and their contributions to the world.

He reminded them that the convocation marked the beginning of a lifelong journey and emphasised the importance of self-reflection, challenging assumptions, and seeking purpose beyond personal ambitions.

A key highlight of the event was the graduation of the first cohorts of two recently introduced programmes. Nineteen students completed the Master’s in Urban Housing, aimed at addressing the critical need for architect-led solutions in the commercial housing sector.

Another 19 students graduated with a Master’s in Architectural Tectonics, a studio-based programme supported by a state-of-the-art workshop that focuses on materials and construction systems.

Following the main ceremony, individual faculty convocations were held, where students received their degrees from their respective Deans.

Distinguished guests, including Himani Jain (Senior Program Lead, CEEW), Manish Srivastava (Professor, New York University), Raj Rewal (Architect, Raj Rewal Associates), Biswas Gaurav (Founder & CEO, Trukker), and Dr Susmita Mohanty (Co-Founder & Director General, Spaceport SARABHAI), served as Chief Guests for these events.
