The Gujarat Police on Friday uncovered an illegal manufacturing unit producing spurious liquor in Mehsana district, arresting two individuals in the process.
Acting on a tip-off, the police conducted a raid and discovered a mini factory in a field in Acharasan village, Mehsana, where illicit foreign liquor was being produced. The spurious liquor was being created by mixing chemicals, colour, malt, and alcohol, before being bottled with counterfeit labels of renowned liquor brands.
The state has remained a dry state since its bifurcation from Bombay State in May 1960, with a ban on the manufacture, storage, sale, and consumption of alcoholic beverages.
During the operation, the authorities seized over 100 litres of fake liquor and apprehended two individuals involved in its production.
A senior police official provided further details, saying, “We had received information that illegal liquor was being sold near Kadi, after which the police raided Acharasan village where this mini-factory was found. Two accused were arrested with different chemicals and further investigation is ongoing.”
The authorities have taken action by registering a case under the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), the Prohibition Act, and the Copyright and Trademark Act.
“Police are currently investigating how many people are involved in this, how these chemicals were purchased, and where the fake liquor was being sold,” the senior official added.
