Congress Alleges Land Scam In The Name Of Sahara Affordable Home Project

| Updated: February 22, 2022 18:39

Way back in 2012, Sahara India launched 10 integrated township projects across Tier II and III cities across India. Covering a total land mass of 900 acres, affordable homes were to be sold in the Rs 5.5 to Rs 11 lakh price range.

Each Sahara City Affordable Home Project was to be built at a total outlay of Rs 100-125 crore, to be financed through customer advances and bank loans. Ahmedabad and Rajkot were among the destinations.

In a press conference held today at Gandhinagar, a retired government officer, investor in the project and one who does not wish to be named stated – “Our money is lost. Several middle-class families like us, invested in the project because Sahara stands for quality construction. Today, not only do we not know where the money has gone but do not even know where to seek redressal.”

The large plot of land in Rajkot for construction of “Lucknow Township” wears a deserted look now. A half-constructed plan and thousands of dreams lie abandoned in its dust, is all there is to the project now. Trailing
the case further, loose ends have clearly emerged. For instance, the Opposition Congress pins the mess on BJP’s “zoning change,” handled by ex-CM Vijaybhai Rupani. “This was not supposed to be on Sarkar’s
(government) land. Shri Vijaybhai owes us all answers as does Rajkot BJP leader, Nitin Bhardwaj,” jointly alleged Congress MLAs Sukhrambhai Rathwa, Shailesh Parmar and Dandakshri C at a press briefing held in the city, Tuesday.

In fact, a statement issued to question the ruling party also notes “30 different revenue survey numbers for Anandpur (Navagam) and Maliyasana villages.”

“The land allotted for the purpose has been parcelled off consistently over the years. The original land, handed over to Sahara India Home Corporation, ran into over hundred acres. What we are left with today is
an eyewash to muffle questions,” the leaders stated at the meet.

When asked to detail the modus operandi, they explained that a “zoning change” allows the piece of land in question to be reviewed, re-assessed and hence, “re-sold.” This is where the crux of the scam lies and “it could not have been done without the Rajkot Urban Development being hand in glove with vested interests.”

Since the then CM Vijaybhai Rupani, was in charge of the urban development department, his role needs to be probed, added the Congress leaders. A copy of the press release, which is with VO!, lists each violation in the context of specific Resolution from the civic body’s development handbook.

“The scam was done to facilitate land parcels at throwaway prices to close relatives and friends. We do not know what the secret deal was with Sahara India but all we are questioning is where has the advance disappeared?” the trio asked the ruling party for answers.

The role of Seth Builders is also under the scanner, with Congress insisting on handing over the investigation to CBI.
