An Ahmedabad-based software engineer and staff of US-based Meshtek Labs has landed a cyber crime case following his tiff with the company.
Karan Gandhi was allowed to work from home in Ahmedabad as a backend developer for the company, which specialises in the creation of smart light devices utilising Internet of Things (IoT) technology.
Karan, an employee at the Ahmedabad branch of the company, took actions that resulted in the deletion of all data from the company’s website and the linkage of the company website meshtek.com to a pornographic site.
Karan had been entrusted with responsibilities related to backend and website development, granting him the authority to access, modify, and erase data within the company’s systems.
Subsequent to these events, the company’s HR manager, Aarti Chaddha, visited Karan’s office in Ahmedabad in July in an attempt to retrieve the iPad, laptop, and smart lighting devices entrusted with him. Regrettably, upon reaching out to Karan, he only returned the laptop, retaining possession of the iPad and smart lighting devices. His explanation for doing so was contingent upon the company furnishing him with a release letter, an experience certificate, and other requisite documentation before the return of these company assets.
The situation took a more serious turn on September 3, 2023, when those attempting to access the company’s website were found to be directed to pornographic content on a different website. This incident has inflicted substantial damage upon the company’s reputation, prompting the formal submission of a cybercrime complaint.
In response, the police have initiated an investigation to ascertain the full extent of the incident.
