Initial trends from the Election Commission indicate that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) could be on course to reclaim power in Delhi, with its candidates leading in 41 of the 70 seats where at least one round of counting has been completed.
A BJP win would signal the party’s return to power in the national capital after 27 years and deal a major blow to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which has governed Delhi since 2013.
Here are the newest updates on the Delhi election results:
(13:13 pm) – As counting trends pointed to a strong BJP victory in Delhi after more than 27 years, jubilant supporters gathered outside the party headquarters to celebrate. Waving flags and dancing to the beat of drums, the crowd smeared saffron powder on each other, symbolising the party’s success. Among the revellers was a man dressed as Aamir Khan’s character from the film PK, who humorously declared, “The broom is gone, and the lotus has bloomed,” referencing the BJP’s victory over AAP. The scene was marked by festivity and optimism for the party’s future.
In a major setback for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), senior leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia conceded defeat in the Jangpura seat, losing to the BJP’s Tarvinder Singh Marwah by over 600 votes. With trends for all 70 assembly seats declared, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is on course for a strong comeback in the national capital, leading in 48 seats while AAP is ahead in 22, as of 12:30 pm.
(12:09 pm) – Reacting to the Delhi Assembly election results, social activist Anna Hazare, with whom AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal was associated during numerous anti-corruption campaigns, said: “I have been saying for a long time that a candidate contesting an election must have character, good principles, and an untarnished reputation. However, they (AAP) did not understand this. They became entangled in liquor and money—his (Arvind Kejriwal’s) image was damaged as a result, and that is why they are receiving fewer votes in the election.”
He added: “People saw that he (Arvind Kejriwal) speaks of integrity but gets involved in liquor… In politics, allegations are made. One must prove their innocence. The truth will always remain the truth. When a meeting was held, I decided that I would not be part of the party, and I have stayed away ever since.”
