Early trends from the Election Commission suggest that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) may be poised to regain power in Delhi, with its candidates leading in 41 of the 70 seats where at least one round of counting has been completed.
A BJP victory would mark the party’s return to power in the national capital after 27 years and represent a significant setback for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which has governed Delhi since 2013. The AAP currently leads in 29seats, while the Congress has yet to secure a lead in any seat, according to initial results.
The recent Budget announcement of a tax exemption for those earning below Rs 12 lakh annually has resonated with the middle class, possibly influencing voter sentiment.
In several constituencies where AAP is leading, the margins are narrow, often less than 1,000 votes. The closest contest is in Rohini, where AAP’s Pardeep Mittal is ahead of BJP’s incumbent MLA Vijender Gupta by a mere 48 votes.
AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal faces a tight race against BJP’s Parvesh Sahib Singh, underscoring the fiercely contested nature of the Delhi Assembly elections. The final outcome remains uncertain as counting progresses.
