Ahmedabad witnessed another spell of heavy rainfall late Friday night, bringing 45 mm of rain and pushing the city into a red alert for Saturday. While Friday daytime remained relatively dry, the overnight downpour led to severe waterlogging across several parts of the city, disrupting traffic, affecting public transport, and leaving many commuters stranded.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that more heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over the next 24 hours, asking residents to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel.
Overnight Rain Brings Relief From Heat but Creates New Problems
After a largely dry Friday, rain returned with intensity during the night. According to the IMD, Ahmedabad received 45 mm of rainfall, enough to flood low-lying roads and cause traffic congestion across many parts of the city.
The sudden spell brought down temperatures and provided relief from the humid weather. However, the heavy rain also exposed the city’s drainage issues, with several roads submerged under rainwater within a short period.
Officials said the city had been under an orange alert on Friday, but the forecast was upgraded to a red alert on Saturday due to the possibility of more intense rainfall.
Western Parts of Ahmedabad Worst Affected
The western parts of Ahmedabad were among the worst-hit areas, where roads turned into waterlogged stretches, making it difficult for vehicles to move.
Commuters travelling during the morning hours faced long delays as traffic moved slowly through flooded roads. Many two-wheelers stalled in the water, while buses and cars struggled to pass through submerged streets.
Public transport services were also affected, forcing passengers to wait longer or look for alternative travel options.
Rainfall Recorded Across the City
Rainfall was recorded in several parts of Ahmedabad, with different areas receiving varying amounts of rain.
Among the major locations:
Fatewadi recorded the highest rainfall at around 63 mm.
Bodakdev received around 47 mm.
Bopal recorded 40 mm.
Science City received around 34.5 mm.
Usmanpura recorded approximately 33.5 mm.
Aasarwa received around 32.5 mm.
Paldi recorded nearly 31.5 mm.
Chandkheda received around 30 mm.
The widespread rainfall ensured that almost every part of the city experienced moderate to heavy showers.
AMC Activates Flood Response Measures
Following the heavy rainfall forecast, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) activated its flood response system.
The civic body placed flood-control teams on alert and deployed emergency personnel across vulnerable locations. Officials also kept pumping stations, drainage teams, rescue staff, and engineering personnel on standby to respond quickly if the rainfall intensified.
Control rooms continued monitoring the situation throughout the night, while civic teams remained ready to clear blocked drains and remove accumulated rainwater wherever required.
IMD Predicts More Heavy Rainfall Today
The IMD has forecast that Ahmedabad is likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall on Saturday as a strong weather system continues to influence Gujarat.
The forecast also indicates that several districts across Gujarat may receive widespread rainfall, with isolated places expected to witness extremely heavy showers.
Residents have been advised to remain indoors during periods of intense rain, avoid travelling through waterlogged roads, and stay away from rivers, lakes, and underpasses that may flood quickly.
Authorities Urge Citizens to Stay Alert
Authorities have appealed to citizens to remain cautious, especially those living in low-lying areas. Motorists have been advised to drive carefully as visibility may reduce during heavy showers and several roads could remain submerged.
Emergency teams remain on standby, and the administration is closely monitoring the weather situation as Ahmedabad prepares for another day of intense monsoon activity.
With the city now under a red alert, officials expect the next few hours to be crucial, urging residents to follow weather advisories and avoid unnecessary movement until conditions improve.
