Toxic air quality due to the coal mines in Jharkhand’s Dhanbad has resulted in the district having the highest number of people suffering from respiratory issues like tuberculosis, lung cancer and asthma – leading to overwhelming number of patients with such respiratory problems in its hospitals. The district records as many as 250 cases per day.
United Nations Climate Change Conference in which 197 countries participated, was held in Glasgow, Scotland from 31 October to 13 November, 2021. All the countries present in the conference, agreed to a new deal called – the Glasgow Climate Pact.
Glasgow Climate Pact mentions coal as the biggest contributor to Climate Change. However, there is minimal hope left for Dhanbad’s people because of the coal mines in the area. The air quality is so bad that one starts to feel nausea and headaches after spending just a few minutes in open atmosphere.
The government has provided around 7,00,000 people with new apartment blocks realising the need for people to be relocated. As many as 4,000 families have moved from Dhanbad to Belgaria.
