A stretch of arid land on Gujarat’s coast is stirring with digital ambition.
Dholera, projected as the state’s smart industrial city, is poised to catapult Gujarat onto India’s data centre map.
Potential investments in data centre ventures are reportedly pegged at over Rs 4 lakh crore over a period of time.
It’s learnt that in the Gujarat government, Adani Group is likely to commit investments worth Rs 3 lakh crore to set up a data centre at Dholera over a period of time.
Other major corporates are expected to invest another Rs 1 lakh to Rs 2 lakh crore in the data centre ecosystem.
The Gujarat government has set the stage by reserving land for a ‘Data Centre Park’. The state is reportedly drafting a data centre policy. Also, it is aligning incentives with those offered by the Union government and peer states.
It has also indicated readiness to provide customised incentives to players intending to invest in the sector.
Top officials in the state government told media outlets that the Adani Group had zeroed in on Dholera for its proposed data centre venture.
The group’s investment was expected to be estimated at Rs 3 lakh crore.
Other top corporates had also evinced interest in setting up data centres at Dholera.
The cumulative investment in the data centre sector at Dholera was reportedly expected to be more than Rs 4 lakh crore in the coming months.
The development is reaffirmation of the fact that India’s data centre sector is undergoing a major transformation. It is shifting from small enterprise server rooms to becoming a key driver of the digital economy.
The sector is currently clustered around Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, and Chennai as major hubs. Hyderabad, Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, and Pune are also key centres, reports highlighted.
Dholera is emerging as a key industrial and economic hub under the Delhi–Mumbai Industrial Corridor.
It is positioned as India’s first dedicated semiconductor city. Located about 100 km from Ahmedabad in Gujarat’s Dholera Special Investment Region, it has attracted marquee investments. These include a semiconductor fabrication plant and a 10 GW lithium-ion battery plant by the Tata Group.
