Doesn’t matter if party’s PM face isn’t projected: Pawar

| Updated: December 26, 2023 20:33

Sharad Pawar, the leader of the Nationalist Congress Party, stated that there are no repercussions if a Prime Ministerial face is not projected because voters will act to bring about change if they feel like it. This is despite the opposition bloc INDIA having yet to announce its candidate for Prime Minister in the upcoming general elections.

“In the 1977 elections, no face was projected for PM and after the election, Moraraji Desai was elected for the post. His name was nowhere before the elections and, in fact, a new party came into existence. After the polls, Mr Desai was made PM. There are no consequences if a face is not projected. If people are in the mood for a change, they will take the call to bring that change,” the former Union Minister was quoted as saying by a news website.

The nation’s first non-Congress prime minister, Morarji Desai, held office for 856 days. From 1977 to 1979, he led the Janata Party-led post-emergency government as the fifth Prime Minister.

Asked about a poll that gave the Maha Vikas Aghadi an advantage over the ruling coalition in the Lok Sabha elections of 2024, Mr Pawar stated that polls were merely indicators and that people shouldn’t draw conclusions from them.
