With Eyes On Olympics, Ahmedabad To Have Five More Stadiums Soon

| Updated: December 26, 2023 20:14

After Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad is all set to have five more stadiums of the international standard. The Centre and the State government have given approval to the proposal to set up a football stadium of Olympics standard and four stadiums of the international level.

The basic plan has already been approved and the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (Auda) has initiated the process to issue tenders for the five stadiums.

In October, PM Modi had announced India’s desire to host Summer Olympics 2036 and also Summer Youth Olympics 2030.

Sources said that the master plan for the SVP Sports Enclave has been made keeping in mind the requirements for organizing Olympics events. The enclave is likely to play a pivotal role in India’s bid to host the 2036 Olympics.

“The SVP Enclave will be an important cornerstone in making India a global sporting hub. The enclave is one-of-its-kind and at par with the global standards,” said a source.

The enclave will not just have various competition venues but will also have training facilities for various sports. In 2021, Auda had completed a gap assessment of sports infrastructure in the state with a vision to hosting a future edition of Olympics.

“As per the master plan, the enclave will feature five new venues in addition to the existing Narendra Modi Stadium in an integrated 350-acre precinct along the Sabarmati riverfront,” added the source.

The venues will include a 50,000 capacity football stadium, two indoor arenas of capacities 18,000 and 10,000 each, an aquatics centre of 12,000 capacity, and a tennis centre of 10,000 capacity.

In addition, adequate space has been provided to create a vibrant riverfront and to develop temporary venues as per future requirements.

The master plan also seeks to improve general connectivity and access for the larger precinct to ensure a long-term community benefit.

The venues have been designed to allow not just hosting sporting competitions but they can also host various entertainment and business events.

The seating has been planned to be flexible to allow different capacities depending on the requirements.
