Dog Eat Dog Competition For Post of Prohibition Officer

| Updated: July 20, 2022 11:23 am

There is a cut-throat competition in Gujarat for the post of prohibition officer. The competition is such that the state has received 1.13 lakh applications for 39 vacancies for sub-inspectors. Recruitment is being handled by the Gujarat Subordinate Service Selection Board (GSSSB) on behalf of the prohibition and excise department. GSSSB which offered applications for 39 posts of sub-inspectors, along with five-year, fixed pay opportunities for the candidates, received 1.13 lakh applications for mere 39 posts. The recruitment board is set to hold the examination on July 31 across multiple centers of the state.
This means that 2,897 applicants will be fighting for every vacancy.
It was further revealed by a key officer of the prohibition and excise department that above 50% of the posts at various levels are right now vacant.

The officer shared that against the authorized strength of 650, about 350 posts, including director, deputy director, inspector, sub-inspector and other positions are vacant as of now. He stated retirement of staff and non-recruitment of new staff as the main reasons for the vacancies.
It has been a long time since the government gave permission to recruit 39 sub-inspector level officers. Sources shared that these were field-level posts. Talking about the job description of the post, they said that the role of a sub-inspector was to ascertain the best enforcement of prohibition. They are also given the tasks of handing out health permits for liquor consumption.

An officer of GSSSB was surprised at the large number of candidates who had applied for the post of sub-inspector. He says he is astonished that 1.13 lakh applicants have shown interests for mere 39 class III posts. He further said that the performance of the selected ones will be evaluated by the government after five years.
Sources at GSSSB remark that a primary examination will be held in late July and candidates who are shortlisted there will have to appear for another examination by the yearend.
