Empowering Women through PM Ujjwala Yojana: A Workshop Spotlight

In a one-day workshop held on Wednesday, jointly organized by the Central University of Gujarat (CUG) and the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), the focus was on “Women Empowerment through PM Ujjwala Yojana: A Study of Selected Districts of Gujarat and Rajasthan”. The workshop was presided over by Prof. Rama Shanker Dubey, the Vice-Chancellor of CUG.

Prof. Dubey highlighted the importance of women in Indian philosophy, where they are considered symbols of endurance and empathy, and creators in their own right. He referenced the hymns of the Vedas that speak of women’s empowerment and the Indian cultural saying, ‘Matru Devo Bhava’, which translates to ‘Mother is God’.

The workshop shed light on the PM Ujjwala Yojana, a scheme launched in May 2016, aimed at empowering women. The Chief Guest, K.L. Berwal, Chancellor of Dr. Hari Singh Gour University (MP), emphasized how the scheme has saved women time and made their work easier. He described the Ujjwala scheme as a significant step towards establishing an ideal welfare state and advocated for the promotion of such schemes.

A.K. Gupta, Inspector General of Police in the Rajasthan government, and the Guest of Honour of the program, described Ujjwala Yojana as a scheme that leads from darkness to light, terming it an uplifting plan.

Eminent Social Thinker Ashwani Sharma, another Guest of Honour, stated that the beneficial effects of the Ujjwala Yojana reflect the current government’s functioning. He said that Ujjwala is not just a scheme, but a perspective and an important link in fulfilling the resolution of a developed India.

The Director of the Research Project, Prof. Suresh Kumar Agrawal, welcomed all the guests and shared that the project includes eight tribal districts of Rajasthan and Gujarat. Women beneficiaries were also honoured under the scheme during the event, and a booklet prepared for the survey conducted in the research project was released.

Co-director Dr. Satyajeet Deshpande shared the research results with everyone. The Registrar of the University, Prof. H.B. Patel, expressed gratitude to all the guests. After the inaugural session, four executive sessions were also organized, with Prof. Manish, Prof. Tapas Kumar Dalpati, and Prof. Sarita Agrawal as the main speakers. The university staff and research scholars associated with the research project also attended the program.
