Experts Explain Why PM Calls It ‘Precautionary’ Shot

| Updated: December 28, 2021 1:17 pm

Prime Minister Modi announced a third shot of Coronavirus Vaccine for healthcare workers and the senior citizens above the age of 60 in India.

While addressing the citizens of the nation he said that the two categories who are at risk would be given a “precautionary” shot – a very unlikely term which has not been used before, starting from January 10.

The usage of term ‘precautionary’ instead of booster by PM Modi has probed many questions. To this, Dr Chandrakant Lahariya, an epidemiologist stated that the term can be explained and clarified by the government itself.

He also mentioned that India is likely to use the same vaccine for this precautionary dose which is why it can not be called as booster dose. Moreover, there is no supporting data that proves this shot to be any different from the first two shots.

Dr Subhash Salunkhe

Public Health Expert and National Task Force Member Dr Subhash Salunkhe gave his views on this shot saying that the government should clarify such terms as there was no record of such terms being used previously. He also stated in the chat with The Quint that he personally feels, there is no such term called the precautionary dose and he would want to leave the understanding of it to the wisdom of those who designed it.
