The bodies of four members of a family, including a four-month-old girl and her seven-year-old sister, were found in a house at Ravaniya village in Gujarat’s Navsari district on Sunday, police said.

Prima facie, parents of the children killed them before committing suicide by hanging themselves from the ceiling of a room of the house, an official said. “The bodies of two children were found lying on the ground. They were apparently strangled to death by their parents,” briefed Vansda police inspector B.M. Chaudhary.

The head of the family, identified as Chunilal Gavit (39), worked at Uni Beej, an Ayurvedic company in Daman. A native of Ravaniya village in Vasada tehsil of Navsari, he was married to Tanuja nine years ago. She was a homemaker.

According to the preliminary gathering of information, Chunnilal was involved in an extramarital affair with a young woman from Dang.   “This led to frequent quarrels with his wife. However, last night the arguments were very loud,” the police reported a neighbour’s account.

It is believed that the couple first strangled seven-year-old Kashish and then four-month-old  Ditya to death. Later, both committed suicide by hanging themselves. The incident came to light when Chunnilal’s father dropped in to meet the family in the morning.

The police have registered two cases. “One is a criminal offence amounting to homicide in the case of the children’s murder registered against the couple. The other is a case of accidental death of husband and wife. We have collected viscera samples and are probing the matter,” shared an investigating officer.
