A wave of despair has swept through Ahmedabad following five suicides reported within a mere 48 hours, with three of the victims tragically young.
O12 34n Thursday afternoon when Nisha Baghel, a 17-year-old girl, ended her life in Narol by consuming hair dye. Though rushed to the hospital, she succumbed to the poisoning on Friday. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding her decision, as she had reportedly stopped attending school two years prior.
On the same day, a 20-year-old migrant worker from Rajasthan, Ramlal Meena, was found hanging in the staff quarters of his workplace in Anandnagar. While the details remain unclear, authorities have classified it as an accidental death pending further investigation.
The weekend brought forth two more tragedies. On Friday afternoon, Prakash Maru, a 16-year-old Class X student, was discovered hanging from the ceiling fan in his Vasna home while alone. The cause of his suicide remains unknown, with exam stress being one possibility being explored by the police.
Later that evening, 37-year-old Ramswarup Das took his own life in Sola by hanging himself using a bedsheet tied to an elevator angle. In Isanpur, 38-year-old Dhananjay Desai also ended his life at his residence on Thursday night.
These five incidents, particularly the young lives lost, have sent shockwaves through the city and ignited concerns about the underlying issues leading to such drastic measures. Authorities are investigating each case individually, but the sudden occurrence of these tragedies highlights the need for deeper examination of societal pressures, mental health awareness, and support systems available to vulnerable individuals.
