The issue of making parents’ signature mandatory in love marriages has been in discussion in Gujarat for long. Leaders of 32 communities, including Patidars, Rajputs, Ahirs and Prajapatis attended a thought camp in Surat organised by the Sardar Patel Group (SPG).
The camp, headed by Lalji Patel, SPG national head, is said to have discussed ways to prevent false-love marriages; necessary guidance was given to prevent this type of love marriage. SPG has decided to present 4 issues regarding love marriage before the government, in which the issue of mandatory signature of parents was at the top. Patel threatened a fierce agitation if this demand was not met.
He had made a proposal to the government to amend the Love Marriage Act a few months ago. Concern was also expressed over the emerging cases of Hindu girls being lured into love jihad and molested.
The SPG also wants marriage registration to be done on the spot in whichever village, verification of a police station in marriage registration and document verification from Talati to Mamlatdar (collector’s office).
Lalji Patel said, “We are not against love marriage, but we are against the daughter choosing the wrong person. As many as 4,130 false marriages have taken place. So today, people of every society have expressed concern. A committee of all societies will be formed. We will meet the CM and the law minister. We will agitate as the committee will decide. The submission will be conveyed from Gandhinagar to Delhi.”
Karnisena’s Raj Shekhawat said, “There is no problem if a daughter gets married but she should not get married without telling her parents. We demand an amendment in the law for that. The law was amended in the past as well.”
