At least 11 people were injured after a violent confrontation broke out inside a gurdwara in Moers, a city in western Germany, triggering a major police operation and raising concerns over internal disputes spilling into public violence.
The incident unfolded in the Duisburg locality, where around 40 individuals were reportedly involved in a heated clash inside the religious premises. Videos circulating online show chaotic scenes, with groups engaging in physical fights and using sharp objects, including knives and kirpans.
Witness accounts suggest the violence escalated rapidly and may not have been entirely spontaneous. According to a member of the congregation present at the scene, individuals involved in the altercation appeared to be carrying items such as pepper spray and, in at least one instance, a firearm. The witness described how pepper spray was deployed at the outset, followed by what sounded like a gunshot, causing panic among those gathered for prayers.
Authorities have not yet recovered the weapon, but early forensic indications—based on shell casings found at the scene—suggest it may have been a blank-firing pistol rather than a live firearm. Even so, the presence of such a weapon inside a place of worship has intensified the seriousness of the incident.
Emergency responders treated the injured on-site, with paramedics and an emergency physician deployed quickly to stabilise those hurt. While several sustained injuries, officials have indicated that none are believed to be life-threatening.
Preliminary police findings point to an internal dispute as the likely trigger. The conflict is believed to stem from disagreements over the election of a new gurdwara management board, with factions divided over control and decision-making authority. Financial issues, particularly related to the handling and allocation of gurdwara funds, are also being examined as a possible underlying cause.
Witnesses described a long-simmering power struggle between former and current committee members, centred on influence and governance within the religious institution. What began as internal friction appears to have escalated into a coordinated confrontation, with some suggesting elements of premeditation.
German police responded with significant force, including the deployment of specialised tactical units to bring the situation under control. At least one individual was detained at the scene, while investigators from the criminal police department have launched a detailed probe to establish the sequence of events, identify those responsible, and determine whether the violence was planned.
The incident has shocked the local community, highlighting how internal organisational disputes, when left unresolved, can escalate into serious public disorder—even within spaces meant for worship and communal harmony.
