Green Card crackdown: US reviews old cases, tightens fraud net
Washington: The US Citizenship and Immigration Services has stepped up enforcement against immigration fraud, warning Green Card holders that even past approvals could now come under scrutiny.
USCIS Director Joseph Edlow said the agency is expanding investigations and reassessing previously cleared cases, including those granted in earlier years. The move is part of a broader push to identify fraud and tighten compliance.
Authorities are also setting up tip lines and working alongside US Immigration and Customs Enforcement and US Customs and Border Protection to track suspicious activity. Officials made it clear that even minor leads will be examined.
The crackdown signals a shift towards stricter vetting standards, with USCIS emphasising that financial self-sufficiency will be a key factor. Applicants who cannot support themselves, officials said, risk losing eligibility for permanent residency.
A Green Card, or Permanent Resident Card, allows foreign nationals to live and work indefinitely in the United States. However, the latest warning suggests that holding one no longer guarantees immunity from retrospective checks.
With enforcement widening and past cases reopening, Green Card holders may face closer scrutiny as the US sharpens its immigration oversight.
