Gujarat: BJP Leader Withdraws Petition, Paving Way For Visavadar By-Election

| Updated: March 13, 2025 18:29

BJP leader Harshad Ribadiya on Wednesday withdrew his petition challenging the victory of Bhupat Bhayani from the Visavadar seat in the 2022 Gujarat Assembly election. This development clears the path for the announcement of by-elections for the Visavadar constituency.

In the 2022 Assembly elections, Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Bhupat Bhayani emerged victorious from the Visavadar seat.

Ribadiya, representing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), contested the result by filing a petition in the Gujarat High Court, alleging electoral irregularities. However, Bhayani later resigned as an AAP MLA and joined the BJP.

The pending petition in the High Court had delayed the initiation of the by-election process for Visavadar. With Ribadiya’s withdrawal of the petition, the election process is now expected to proceed.

Separately, the Kadi Assembly seat became vacant following the death of its MLA, Karsan Solanki, necessitating a by-election.

The Election Commission is likely to announce by-elections for both Visavadar and Kadi in the coming months.

Both constituencies are anticipated to witness a three-way contest involving the BJP, Congress, and Aam Aadmi Party. The BJP is aiming to retain the Kadi seat and secure a win in Visavadar.
