The Gujarat government has launched a statewide campaign to tackle the issue of moneylenders charging illegal interest rates from common citizens. From January 5th to 31st, 847 FIRs were registered and 1039 accused have been arrested under the Money Laundering Act 2011. In addition, 27 individuals have been charged under the Pasa Prevention of Anti-Social Activities Act (PASA).
As part of the campaign, the home department organised 2389 Lok Darbars across the state with the participation of top police officers and 14,619 police officers/employees. The police encouraged citizens to come forward and report instances of harassment by interest-takers and took prompt legal action.
To further help citizens, all commissioners of police and superintendents of police will be organising special camps in their headquarters with representatives of nationalised and cooperative banks, district industry centres, and other government departments to assist in loan assistance.
The Gujarat police’s efforts have been well received by the people and thousands have been saved from the grip of usury. The new method adopted by the police not only shows statistics but actually works towards protecting the rights of citizens and creating public awareness against illegal money lending practices.
