Gujarat Govt Road Tax Collection Totals Rs 9,273 Cr Over Four Years

The state government has collected Rs 9,273.35 crore in 44 months as road tax. The numbers were made known in response to an RTI application.

An RTI application under the Public Information Act-2005 was filed at the office of the Transport Commissioner of the State Government, Gandhinagar, seeking details of the amount collected as road tax in the state during the period January 2019 to August 2022.

In the reply by the Office of the Commissioner of Transport, information was shared till the August 2022.

According to the information, road tax collected from the state in 2019 amounted to Rs 2597.27 crore, Rs 1880.24 crore in the 2020, Rs 2639.13 crore in 2021 and Rs 2156.71 crore till August 2022. That is, an amount of Rs 9,273.35 crore was collected as road tax by the transport department of the state government in 44 months of 4 years.

The Transport Department of the Government collects taxes on vehicles in the form of unified tax, unified tax (optional), resale time of the vehicle, integrated tax, recurring tax.

In the consolidated tax, vehicles such as motorcycles (6%), four-wheelers (6%), auto rickshaws (2.5%), goods vehicles (6%), commercial vehicles (3%) are levied as per the tax percentage of the cost of the vehicle.

The integrated tax (optional) includes Maxicab and ordinary omni bus (7 and 8 persons other than the driver) including 8% of the vehicle cost, Maxicab and ordinary omni bus (9 to 12 persons other than the driver) with 12% of the vehicle cost as tax, medium goods vehicles (GVW 7501 to 12000 kg) including 8% of the vehicle cost as tax, heavy goods vehicles (GVW 7501 to 12000 kg) with 8% of the vehicle cost as tax, heavy goods vehicles (GVW 12001 to 12000 kg) as tax.

Apart from this, recurring tax is levied every year/ month per seating capacity in luxury, sleeper, general buses.
