The Gujarat government decided on Wednesday to purchase 11 lakh doses of goat pox vaccine to combat Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD), a rapidly spreading epidemic among the state’s animal population.
To control this viral illness that causes prolonged morbidity in cows and buffaloes, a massive vaccination drive has been launched in Saurashtra and Kutch.
According to State Agriculture Minister Raghavji Patel, “Following reports of animal deaths, three lakh cattle were vaccinated, and the state now has a stock of two lakh doses of the vaccine.”
“At the moment, we have two lakh vaccine doses.” On Wednesday, we also decided to buy as many vaccine doses as we needed right away. “We’ve vaccinated three lakh cattle so far,” the minister added.
To help “treat and control LSD,” the government has also deployed the Karuna Animal Ambulance Service, which operates under the helpline number 1962. Over 37 animal ambulances are part of the service, which began in October 2017 with GVK-EMRI.
According to the animal husbandry department, Gujarat has an estimated two crore cows and buffaloes, and the cattle population in the 11 districts of Saurashtra and Kutch region is around 44 lakh.
However, only a few cases have been reported to the animal husbandry department. “At the moment, we have 35 cases that have been officially registered with our department,”
