Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM Gujarat Unit planned a signature campaign in support of Hijab after its controversy broke out in Karnataka over the same. Still, just before their signature campaign could take off, Ahmedabad Police detained party leaders and workers from their homes and offices.
AIMIM Gujarat’s General Secretary and Ahmedabad President of Party Shamshad Pathan was detained by Ahmedabad Police early in the morning and was kept in Gaikwad Haveli Police Station with his supporters.
He told Team VOI that Hijab is a fundamental right of women, and as some girls in Karnataka are fighting for their rights Gujarat unit of AIMIM had organized a signature campaign in their support. However, the BJP Government in Gujarat saw that the campaign was about to get massive support, so they decided to use the Police force against us as they have detained many of AIMIM’s Party workers and leaders.
AIMIM Corporator from Ahmedabad city’s Jamalpur area Afsanabanu Chisty who was detained early morning on Saturday from her home, said,” We had planned an event at AIMIM Party Office in Astodia where we were to collect signatures in support of Karnataka girls who are fighting for their fundamental right of wearing what they like and detaining us like this and treating us like criminals don’t serve the purpose as we are fighting for what has been a tradition.”
The Police detained AIMIM’s Corporator from Ahmedabad’s Jamalpur area Mustaqbhai Khadiwala from his party office in the Jamalpur area. He told Team VOI that he was detained while working for people at his office. He said everyone has a right to choose what they wear.
AIMIM’s corporator Beenaben Parmar was detained from her house. She told Team VOI that it is the fundamental right of the people to choose what to wear as you can’t dictate anyone in this regard.
The signature campaign was organized at the Party office in the Astodia area of Ahmedabad on Saturday at 4 pm, but from noon, Police were deployed in huge numbers so that no untoward incident would happen. Police officials told Team VOI that some leaders and workers of AIMIM Gujarat were detained as they were not given any permission to hold a protest.
