Gujarat: Political Reward Alleged In Absentee Teacher’s Elevation As Resource Person In GCERT

| Updated: September 20, 2022 19:55

In a controversial decision, a government teacher who teaches at a primary school in last five years is promoted to be a resource person at the Gujarat Council of Educational Research and Training’s teachers training centre (GCERT).

The state education department promoted Bhikha Patel who was a teacher at the government primary school in Gadha village in Patan district. The gram panchayat had complained to the chief minister on July 18 of this year to say that Bhikha Patel, who was put in charge of the primary school on April 21, 2017, has not gone to school even once.

The letter said, the village panchayat complained to the taluka and district education officers, but neither of them did anything about it. In the letter, the CM was asked to take action against Patel.

Instead of punishing him, the state department of education has put him to work at the GCERT teachers’ training centre, in a job that gives him more power. It is said that Bhikha Patel is rewarded by the government for his favourable role in bringing a compromise during the teachers’ strike.

Patel is the president of the Rashtriya Shaikshik Mahasangh, an association of teachers. The government and the Rashtriya Shaikshik Mahasangh came to an agreement, and the primary school teachers refrained from mass leave agitation over the old pension scheme
