Gujarat Records 16,617 New Covid Cases; 19 Deaths In Last 24 Hours

Gujarat recorded 16,617 coronavirus cases – a steep decline of 28 per cent decrease from yesterday’s tally of 23,150 – and 19 deaths in the last 24 hours. With 19 Covid-19 fatalities, the cumulative number of deaths climbed to 10,249 in Gujarat, the state health department said in a release.

The 19 people who succumbed to the infection were from Ahmedabad (6), Surat (4), Valsad (3), Banaskantha (2), Bhavnagar (1), Mehsana (1), Navsari (1) and Dahod (1). Besides 19 deaths, as many as 258 patients are on ventilator support. 

With today’s update of daily cases, the state’s active cases tally went up to 1,34,837.

While Ahmedabad city remained the biggest contributor with 6,191, 8,194, it was a decline of 24 per cent from yesterday’s 8,194 cases. Other major contributors include Vadodara (2,876), Vadodara Rural (779), Surat (1,512), Surat rural (639), Rajkot (410) and Bhavnagar (399). These six regions made up for 70% of the Covid cases recorded today. 

Scenario Across India

India reported 3.33 lakh (3,33,533) new Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours ending at 9 am on Sunday, 4,171 lower than yesterday. With 2.59 lakh (2,59,168) recoveries, active cases currently stand at 21,87,205. The total number of Omicron cases rose to 10,050. The ministry mentioned that more than 70 per cent of deaths were due to comorbidities.

Omicron in community transmission stage

The Omicron variant of Covid-19 is in the community transmission stage in the country and has become dominant in multiple metro cities where new cases have been rising exponentially, the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG) has said in its latest bulletin.

While most Omicron cases so far have been asymptomatic or mild, hospitalisations and ICU cases have increased in the current wave and the threat level remains unchanged, said the INSACOG bulletin.
