Gujarat is fast earning notoriety for being unsafe for women. On August 25, an 18-year-old girl was stabbed to death in Gujarat’s Valsad district. The incident took place at Dahad village in Umargam tehsil. Police have already arrested two suspects and a search is on for the third culprit.
The incident comes close on the heels of another similar case where a woman on her way to college was killed in broad daylight in Surat by a jilted man. The video of the incident showed a crowd at the spot watching the crime in shock but nobody came forward to save the woman from her attacker.
In the Valsad incident, the Class 12 student was returning home on a two-wheeler from tuition, when a boy who lived near her house stopped her. He was apparently angry because he had seen the girl talking to another boy. “After a heated exchange, the boy pulled out a knife and stabbed the girl in the stomach, legs and neck,” said district Superintendent of Police Rajdeepsinh Jhala. Later, the girl died on the spot.
