A 35-year-old woman from Gujarat’s Patan district has died after she was allegedly set on fire by her neighbour during an argument over the repayment of a ₹5,000 loan, police said.
The victim, Pinki Patni, was a mother of two who earned a living by selling fruits and vegetables. She had borrowed ₹5,000 from her neighbour, Babu Rawal, about a month ago to meet emergency expenses.
Dispute Over Loan Repayment
According to police, Rawal had been repeatedly asking Patni to return the money along with interest. Patni reportedly requested a few more days, saying she did not have the money to repay the loan immediately.
On Sunday, Patni went to another neighbour’s house to discuss the repayment issue. During the meeting, Rawal also arrived carrying a bucket containing an inflammable liquid.
Woman Set Ablaze During Argument
Police said an argument broke out between the two over the loan. During the confrontation, Rawal allegedly poured the inflammable liquid on Patni and set her on fire.
Engulfed in flames, Patni ran onto the road, where people nearby rushed to help her. Bystanders immediately called the 108 emergency ambulance service, and she was taken to Dharpur Civil Hospital.
Shifted to Ahmedabad, Dies During Treatment
While undergoing treatment at Dharpur Civil Hospital, police recorded Patni’s dying declaration.
As her condition became critical, doctors shifted her to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital for advanced treatment. However, she later succumbed to her burn injuries on July 13.
Accused Also Suffers Burns
Police said the accused, Babu Rawal, also sustained nearly 40 per cent burn injuries during the incident. He is currently undergoing treatment at Dharpur Civil Hospital and remains under police watch.
Police Continue Investigation
Police are investigating the case to determine whether the attack was solely linked to the ₹5,000 loan dispute or if there were any other reasons behind the fatal incident. The investigation is ongoing, and officials are examining all possible angles related to the case.
