Harsh Sanghvi Applauds Efforts Of Judiciary In POCSO Cases

| Updated: June 27, 2022 16:13

Gandhinagar: Gujarat Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi praised the recent efforts of Gujarat police and judiciary with cases coming under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Addressing the Regional Consultative meeting of the Western Region on POSCO: Factors hindering the implementation and aspects of assistance of victims, Sanghvi, in his speech, said the judiciary would deliver punishment to offenders in such cases in a limited time.

Sanghvi also stated that the fast and effective ways the police and judiciary have helped reduce the number of cases at the police station.

“Under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi and efforts of Home Minister Amit Shah, strict safeguards have been provided to the victims under the POSCO Act. Due to e-courts and fast track courts, the judgment has quickened,” said Sanghvi.

He added that the court served judgement on 45 cases within 60 days in the past four months. However, the directive in the POSCO Act states that the charge sheet should be available within 60 days. He further claimed that the administration must take more such steps in the future.

As per the Home Minister, the police filed a case in Bhavnagar within 24 hours, and the judiciary gave a judgement within 35-40 days. “People have started trusting the act more,” he said.

Furthermore, Sanghvi spoke that the change in society’s perception must change for victims in these cases. He called upon the victims’ families to report such issues at the police station and that society shouldn’t ‘back-talk’ about the children.

The conference happened in collaboration with the National Legal Services Authority of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy, National Forensic Sciences University, and the Bureau of Police Research and Development.
