For once, justice has not been not delayed. A court in Gujarat’s Surat awarded death sentence to a convict in the rape and murder case of a two-year-old girl. The court convicted the 35-year-old man who was charged for rape, murder, and abduction under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The court had pronounced its judgement within a month of his arrest.

The court convicted accused, Guddu Yadav, under various charges of kidnapping, rape and murder under the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Both the accused and the victims are from Bihar and live in the Pandesara area. According to the prosecution, Yadav abducted the two-and-a-half-year-old daughter of a migrant worker couple. After raping, he smothered her to death on the night of November 4. Her body was found on November 7 near a factory, located a kilometer away from her house.

After scanning several CCTV footage and gathering information from locals, police arrested Yadav on November 9. In a record seven days, the Pandesara police submitted a chargesheet recording statements of 43 witnesses.

Special POCSO court judge PS Kala convicted Yadav. Public prosecutor Nayan Sukhadwala demanded capital punishment for the accused. However, the defense counsel sought leniency claiming the Yadav’s young children future would be compromised.
