History Of Shiv Sena Rebels That Caused Havoc In Maharashtra Politics

| Updated: June 22, 2022 09:22

Eknath Shinde, the latest Shiv Sena rebel, has put MVA (Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi) government’s future in danger. As he camps in Surat, Gujarat, with 20 other MLAs, he leaves CM Uddhav Thackeray’s fate wavering in anticipation.

Uddhav Thackeray’s confidant Shinde revolted against his party in a silent exercise on June 21. Sources say that BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis and Gujarat BJP President CR Paatil were also a part of the ruse. However, more than 30 Shiv Sena MLAs stay isolated with a ‘finger on their lips.’

However, it is not the first time a Shiv Sena leader rebelled against the right-wing party founded by Bal Thackrey. Shiv Sena, like Congress, became a breeding ground for political leaders to leave in anger, frustration, or disagreement.

Here are a few OGs of flamboyant Shiv Sena Rebels.

Chagan Bhujbal- Thackrey’s Blue-Eyed Boy

In 1991, Chagan Bhujbal, a Shiv Sena MLA from Mazagaon, took 17 out of 52 party legislators to form a parallel Shiv Sena.

Currently serving as Food and Civil Supply Minister, Consumer Affairs for the Maharashtra government, OBC leader Bhujbal was supremo Thackrey’s closest aide.

But, they fell apart when the ‘Hindu Hriday Samrat’ designated the position of the opposition party leader to Manohar Joshi in the Maharashtra Assembly.

In 1991, Bhujbal joined the Nationalist Congress Party, a part of the ruling alliance in Maharashtra under Sharad Pawar. Later, he held significant posts like Deputy CM and State Home Minister.

Konkan Politician- Narayan Rane

An exit that left a crack in the walls of Sena was that of Narayan Rane. In 1999, the branch head percolated through the ranks aiming to become the Chief Minister of Maharastra.

But in 2005, Sena expelled him as he oppugned Uddhav’s leadership. The party also blamed him for anti-party activities. Meanwhile, Rane claimed that tickets and posts in Shiv Sena were ‘for sale.’

After breaking knots with Shiva Sena, Rane joined the INC. However, in 2017, Rane resigned from Congress after not receiving the ‘promised CM seat’ and asserted the lack of scope in the party.

Later, he formed his own Maharashtra Swabhiman Paksha. In 2019, MSP merged with BJP, making a path to Rajya Sabha for Rane.

Raj Thackeray

However, the most shocking case of insurgency was when Bal Thackrey’s nephew Swararaj Shrikant Thackeray, also known as Raj Thackrey, left the party. In 2005, cousin Thackrey’s one move was like a pendulum for Maharashtra politics. ‘The lack of democracy within Shiv Sena’ was his reason for leaving a party that had his own blood relations.

In 2009, his newly formed party, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, achieved instant success with 13 seats in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. However, in 2019, MNS only acquired one seat in the Assembly.
