IIMA tops management institutes; IIT Madras hits a hat-trick as the best institute

IIM Ahmedabad is placed as the best management institute yet again whereas CEPT University has ranked 5th in Architecture which is one position lower than last year.

Gujarat National Law University stands at the 6th position in all the law institutes which has climbed up by one spot. National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research Ahmedabad has been ranked the tenth position in the top Pharmacy Institutions which is two positions lower than 2020.

There are four institutes in the top 10 from Gujarat from all the categories. However, many other prestigious institutes from Gujarat such as MSU, AU, Gujarat University and many more are not seen in the Top 10 in any of the 11 categories of the NIRF India Ranking, 2021.

IIT Madras has been placed as the best institute overall for the third and sixth time in the Engineering Category. 

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) that lists top universities and colleges in India released its list, NIRF India Rankings, 2021, today, September 9. The e-release of the sixth edition of NIRF was led by the Union Minister, Dharmendra Pradhan.

Th NIRF India Ranking 2021 has been announced for 11 categories:
Overall, University, Management, College, Pharmacy, Medical, Engineering, Architecture, Dental, Law and Research Institutions.

What are the NIRF ranking parameters?

The NIRF India Ranking parameters and the weighted averages adopted to derive the rankings differ for all the categories. The broad categories adopted to rank the colleges, universities and institutes include Teaching, Learning and Resources; Research and Professional Practice; Graduation Outcomes; Outreach and Inclusivity and Peer Perception.

What is NIRF?

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) was approved by the Ministry of Education (then MHRD) and launched by the Minister of Education (then Minister of MHRD) on September 29, 2015.

With each passing year, the number of institutes participating in NIRF rankings has increased and so have the categories in which institutes are ranked. This year as many as 6,000 colleges and universities participated this year. In 2016, the institutes were ranked in only four categories which increased to nine in 2019 and 11 in 2021.

The NIRF India Ranking, 2021 for different categories is as follows:

Top 10 Overall Institutes:

  5. IIT Kanpur 
  6. IIT Kharagpur 
  7. IIT Roorkee
  8. IIT Guwahati 
  9. JNU, New Delhi

Gujarat University has dropped to the 63rd position overall from the 60th position in 2020 whereas the IIT, Gandhinagar has jumped two places and has acquired 33rd place this year.

This year, Gujarat University has moved one place upwards and has been ranked 43rd position overall whereas PDPU and MSU have been ranked 73 and 90, respectively.
