IMD: Storm Brewing in Arabian Sea

| Updated: July 17, 2022 12:15

A storm is brewing in the Arabian Sea, 70 kilometers off the Gujarat coast in Okha, with wind speeds exceeding 50 kilometers per hour and moving towards Oman, according to IMD on Sunday.

Since its formation 100 kilometers west of the Porbandar coast on Saturday morning, the weather system, classified as a depression, has been monitored by cyclone watchers at the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

“It is very likely to move west-north westwards towards the coast of Oman across the northwest Arabian Sea during the next 48 hours,” said the weather office in a national bulletin issued Sunday morning.

According to the IMD, the depression over the northeast Arabian Sea off the coasts of Saurashtra and Kutch moved northwestwards slowly over the last six hours at a speed of 5 kmph and was centering at 5:30 a.m. on Sunday, about 170 kilometers west-northwest of Porbandar, 70 kilometers west-northwest of Okha, 70 kilometers south-southwest of Naliya (Gujarat), and 270 kilometers south-southeast of Karachi (Pakistan).

Squally weather is expected along Gujarat’s coasts until Sunday evening, with wind speeds reaching 55 kmph and occasional highs of 65 kmph.

The seas are expected to become rough along and off the Gujarat coast until Sunday evening, and fishermen are advised not to venture out until the storm passes.
