Their house is quieter than ever. For Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal and his wife Kiran, the laughter and presence of their son Agnivesh is now only a memory. The 49-year-old industrialist’s sudden death in the United States has left the family grappling with grief that Agarwal describes as “the darkest day” of his life.
While the void left by their son will never be filled, Agarwal and his wife Kiran have found purpose in carrying forward a vision they shared with him.
Agarwal has renewed a long-standing pledge to give away more than 75% of his wealth to society, a vision he shared with his son. He recalled their shared dream: ensuring no child sleeps hungry, no child is denied education, every woman stands on her own feet, and every young Indian has meaningful work.
“I had promised Agni that more than 75% of what we earn would be given back to society,” he said. “Today, I renew that promise and resolve to live an even simpler life.”
“To me, he was not just my son. He was my friend. My pride. My world,” Agarwal was quoted as saying, adding that he and Kiran are struggling to come to terms with the loss.
He also reflected on his son’s belief in a self-reliant India. His son would often ask why the nation should ever see itself as lacking. Even amid grief, the family draws strength from the thousands of young people working across Vedanta, whom Agarwal described as an extended family.
“There was so much life ahead of him. So many dreams yet to be lived,” he said, adding that Agnivesh will live on through the work he inspired and the lives he touched.
In a final message to his son, Agarwal said he does not know how to walk the path without him, but he will try to carry his light forward.
“We believed the worst was behind us. But fate had other plans,” Agarwal said in a deeply emotional statement, describing a loss that has left the family shattered. “A son is not meant to leave before his father.”
