The ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM)-Congress alliance in Jharkhand has outperformed exit poll projections, crossing the halfway mark in the state assembly elections. Meanwhile, in Maharashtra, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has surged to a commanding lead, marking a significant turnaround from its performance in the Lok Sabha elections.
In Jharkhand, the election battle began as a closely fought contest, but the coalition led by Hemant Soren’s JMM has emerged victorious, leading in 48 seats—comfortably surpassing the majority mark of 42 in the 81-member assembly. The NDA, with leads in 31 seats, appears set to finish as a distant second.
Maharashtra, on the other hand, has witnessed a strong showing by the ruling Mahayuti alliance, which includes the BJP, Ajit Pawar’s Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) faction, and Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena. The alliance is leading in 220 constituencies, far exceeding the majority mark of 145 in the 288-member assembly. The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), comprising the Congress, the Sharad Pawar-led NCP faction and Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT), trails significantly, with leads in 54 seats.
In addition to the state assembly elections, results are awaited for 48 assembly by-polls across 13 states, as well as two key parliamentary constituencies: Nanded in Maharashtra and Wayanad in Kerala.
Meanwhile, in Wayanad, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is making her electoral debut from the constituency, vacated by her brother Rahul Gandhi after he opted to represent Rae Bareli. She leads the parliamentary by-election by a significant margin of over 1.5 lakh votes.
